The Texas sky was oil black, with only a small band of lighter gray lining the eastern horizon as we stole across the open plain. My guide, Austin Land, with Wild Country Outfitters (wildcountryoutfitters .com), led the way. Apart from the soft scraping of our heavy snake boots on the arid ground, the only other sounds interrupting the pre-dawn silence were the crickets and a moderate wind. It was mid-April, and we were hunting a smaller portion of the nearly 10,000-acre Rocking Chair Ranch near Fort McKavett, Texas. The sprawling ranch, lying on the western edge of the Edwards Plateau, fell squarely inside the range of our quarry, the Rio Grande wild turkey.
