The average gas-powered outboard releases about 165 times more emissions per gallon of gas burned than the average car. And that comparison is made with today’s more efficient and federally regulated outboards. With around 12-million recreational boats on the water each year in America alone, emissions can be significant.
Older two-stroke engines put unburned gas and oil directly into the water while releasing significant amounts of air pollutants like hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide (CO2). Over 20-percent of the fuel in the tank of an older outboard ends up in our lakes and rivers.
