I'd lost focus. It had been a six-day dawn-to-dark grind. My eyelids tugged down, partly from exhaustion but mostly to shade my eyes from the icy snow pellets raining down.
As the rut goes, the week had been uneventful. I had an encounter with a mature eight-point hours into my first evening. Now, five days later, I'd yet to see another branch-antlered buck on the hoof. I was about to call it a trip. I had a Colorado tag burning a hole in my pocket, and I knew on my home dirt, while I might not see a shooter buck daily, I would spy plenty of bucks if I spent the same amount of time in the tree.
