When I was a kid learning to fish with my dad and uncle in the 1970s, I envied their red Abu Garcia 5000C baitcasters. They were considered among the premier baitcasters of their day, but my dad kept me at arm’s length from them because they were so darned finicky to cast. He knew one wrong move with my uneducated thumb could lead to him breaking out the pocketknife to cut away the bird’s nest.
